Who we are

We are a community of advocates, survivors, therapists, and leaders who recognize the critical need for maternal mental health care in Miami-Dade. We are mothers who slipped through cracks and providers who have faced challenges in giving and locating services for mothers and families. We have faced the daunting task of navigating the mental health care system in South Florida and have experienced the gaps and barriers in care as they exist in regards to maternal mental health disorders and complications for women and men during pregnancy and postpartum.

What Is Postpartum Support International miami

We are an initiative of Postpartum Support International (PSI) Florida, a chapter of Postpartum Support International, the leading nonprofit dedicated to helping families suffering from postpartum depression, anxiety, and distress both nationally and internationally.  As an initiative of PSI Florida, we adhere to the guidelines of PSI Florida and we operate as a satellite site to promote awareness, prevention and treatment of mental health issues related to childbearing in South Florida. We launched in March 2017.

It is the vision of PSI Miami that every woman and family in South Florida will have access to information, social support, and informed professional care to deal with mental health issues related to childbearing. In short, we want every South Florida mother and baby to thrive.

How we achieve that vision

PSI Miami promotes this vision through advocacy and collaboration, and by educating and training the professional community and the public.

But what does that really look like?

  • Treatment

Currently, our website serves as a virtual container for women looking for help in South Florida. We have the (only list) (does that sound pompous?) of qualified and vetted professionals that are specialized to treat women suffering from a maternal mental health illness. Our provider list includes listings for local reproductive psychiatrists, therapists, support groups, doulas, baby nurses, childbirth educators and online support services. We also have a warm line number (show) where women can get free, understanding, private support and professional referrals. We have done the legwork, locating low to no cost services, providers with a certain insurance to providers who work in a certain geographic region of South Florida.

  • Awareness

We also conduct outreach to provider offices like obstetricians, pediatricians, hospitals, doulas, midwives, childbirth educators, and lactation specialists.

  • Building Capacity

We work to connect the above professionals to training through PSI and 2020 Mom webinars.

  • Coalition Building

We will be convening the first South Florida Maternal Mental Health task force in September 2017 to bring key stakeholders to the table to begin to address maternal mental health gaps in Miami.

  • Advocacy

We participate in the Florida Maternal Mental Health Collaborative, statewide movement to close the gaps in maternal mental health care in Florida.
